Hi, I keep getting the link state changed to DOWN, link state changed to UP msgs in the system logs. This has been happening for sometime. I used to get the same msgs on m0n0wall too. What I've done so far; 1. Changed patch cable 2. Changed NIC 3. Change PoE adapter (this is happening on the WAN interface which is getting link from a ubiquity device) 4. Upgraded from m0n0wall to SmallWall 5. Changed the entire box, I had SmallWall installed on an old Compaq Deskpro EN, now I have it on a Fujitsu Futro S500 Thinclient. This is only happening on the WAN interface, could it be something with the ubiquity PoE adapters? Next I am going to place a switch between the PoE adapter and the SmallWall box and see what happens. Any thoughts? Attachments:

Generally, this means the connection from the ISP is bouncing. Yes, putting a switch in place will suppress it in the logs, but if you log the switch, you will probably see it there. When I have seen this, it usually means either the cable modem is about to die, or the connection is getting crappy.
Log your speed when it is happening. If it is a problem (and an in-line switch hides it) yell at your ISP. (I saw yell because I have Comcast and they do not speak "rational.")
However, it could also be the realtek nic pitching a fit. They do that too... The other thing to try is flipping the ports on your firewall and seeing it the trouble "moves."

Thanks Lee, I'm going to try flipping the ports later today, I'm hoping I can successfully do this from the GUI under "Interfaces (assign)", (I hate hooking up a monitor). Its not going to be easy to log the speeds when this is happening since its happening for 2-3 secs in unpredictable intervals. I'm beginning to think that its the connection bouncing since I've also noticed sharp drops in the traffic graph from time to time. (soon I'll be yelling at the ISP)

The change will require a reboot, so you can do it from the GUI, or edit the config file by hand and upload it. (Because you will have a fresh config file downloaded, right? ) And if they stone wall you, set up a small server or VM with cacti monitoring ping time to 8.8.8.8 so you have documentation to back it up!

Ahaaa, that cacti monitoring idea is great.
Let me flip the interfaces and see...a reboot is ok (have never seen anything boot faster than this thincient, just seconds) and yes I always keep a config file ready jus incase.
