What's the big problem with PHP? Is it changes in functions? I have one very tiny php page where I had to update a bunch of functions going from a version of PHP to another version. If it's something like that, I might be able to take crack at it. Although PHP is up to v 7.0.1 now, which boasts lots of speed improvements, if those are of any interest... Originally thought the PHP files would require significant changes to work with a PHP upgrade to version 5.5. With minimal changes to some PHP files I was able to upgrade unixwall (fork of m0n0wall). Although I didn't make the commit to Github since it still needed some few more adjustments. Not on the top of my list at this point anyways. I think the issue is that both the SmallWall and t1n1wall developers are concerned about the binary size increase. At a minimum it's going to be around a 2mb size increase from the current 1.3mb size. Personally though I think PHP should be upgraded. If you're still using a CF card or something similar that isn't larger than 16mbs I think it's about time to make a minor change in your life.

I am somewhat mixed on the issue. On the one side, being current is good. On the other side; - It is bigger
- It has more features, which means mor attack surface
- It is not as mature and secure as the old versions
- Patches can be made to the old version making it more secure then 7 by far
- The current version is where the focus on hacking is...
If you're still using a CF card or something similar that isn't larger than 16mbs I think it's about time to make a minor change in your life. You are forgetting all of the older ALiX and Wrap boards out there with soldered on flash. They are going away as Internet speeds outpace them, but they are still out there. Support for small stuff is the reason we forked and did not move to OPNsense... One solution to this Andy has been working on is to compress the files on the image. However, that has some tradeoffs as well... As for my thinking right now, I am still undecided. And knowing that, I am focusing my efforts on the places where I am "Decided" and working on those. When they are done, I may look at php again.
