It has been a couple of weeks and I thought people might be interested where we stand.
We are here to stay
When I first began this I was not sure what would happen. Would OPNsense come out with a lean version? Would Manuel decide to un-retire the project? Would some of the other devs come up with a different and better project? Would no one care?
Well, people do care! Activity on the forum has been more than the m0n0wall forums had, and people seem involved. What you have not seen is activity on the website. Since I posted some very preliminary images, people have been downloading them every day. Every single day.
This makes me very happy!
Development is happening
I was worried that I might be the only one interested in continuing this, and I can't do it all. But there are others that have been working with me behind the sceans. I will have a new image up soon that fixes a few UI things and addresses (bot not totally fixes) the bug in L2TP. More then that, there is movement on the web GUI. Both in look and feel and in cleaning up the code to prepare for a php version upgrade. This is a much longer project, but the payoff is worth it!
Infrastructure is in place
And more importantly, the infrastructure is not expensive! Right now I am paying all the bills, but they are small. The website looks to be about 20 cents a month at this rate. Of course a new image could double that!
The forums are free, but I may actually make them paid if advertising gets to be a problem. Mail hosting is free as well. The svn and build servers are sitting on existing Internet, so also have no cost. This means the project will not fail because money gets tight.
And so the point is...
We are good. When I set this all up I was not sure what would happen, but now I am. There are people interested in continuing what m0n0wall started, and enough are here to keep it going. Now there will not be a lot of frequent updates, because we are starting from a very stable platform. But they will happen, new hardware will be supported, and security risks will be addressed. Welcome to the club!
PS: There is still room for web and php guys!
